Moods, a Home in Motion by Whirlpool
A revolutionary technology that is going to make life a great deal of ease is under research by whirlpool. Each day we have a different kind of mood as on weekdays we live a very active life-style but as we approach the weekend we have a mood in which we need to relax and the things go a little slow. Wouldn’t it be great if the home appliances adapt themselves as we undergo a change in the mood? For example: – we might not want the things in evening that we might need in the morning. So we might need to arrange the things in the evening from as it was in the daytime. In customary lifestyle it happens that we need to change the things on our own but wouldn’t it be great that the constituents of a home will change automatically according to our mood, i.e. the domestic environment could automatically change to suit to our shifting needs and emotions?
In Home is a prototype developed by whirlpool as a lead towards the flexible home that adapts itself to varying situations and moods. This project is a representation of a new way of interacting with home appliances. The interfaces in the product are very simple and intuitive. The control panel are very obtrusive which will be visible only when needed. This is a home that allows the user to set the most suitable mood according to the moment and to the situation. Appliances are no longer only responding to a precise functional demand, this is taken for granted, as is the fact that technology is becoming ever simpler and more efficient. For the first time, products act as a link between the function, the environment, and the mood of the users. From lights, to images, to music, home surroundings transform to satisfy the needs of a family. Four different settings maximises ease of use, that to without stress and waste of energy, viz :-
Morning on the Run :- This mode comes into act when you are in a hurry when a lot needs to be done in a very small period of time. The usual morning schedule goes like Alarm clock goes off – cup of black coffee – three messages from the office – kids need to be taken to school – you have an important meeting in two hours. So this rushed environment demands the most automated way of getting the works done. So in these kinds of days the home will also act as frantically as you do. The mirror reminds you of a crucial meeting and the wardrobe holding that special formal suit lights up miraculously. Whilst you grab some water, the TV screen informs you of the day’s weather forecast. As you go out of the house, you nearly forget the kids’ lunch: fortunately a compartment in the fridge lights up to remind you.
During this time of the week you need a lot of planning and a lot of efficiency so the appliances are in need of getting intelligent so the dishwasher is equipped equipped with a special compartment to wash breakfast cups in just a few minutes. A water purifier dispenses hot and cold water, still or fizzy, depending on how you move the glass. So you won’t need to switch the kettle on for you tea, nor use the microwave. The fridge’s glass door lets you see the lit-up compartment with your kids’ lunch. It will switch itself off as soon as you leave the house.
Big Night Mode: - So it’s the night when you have thrown a party for your friends and family and everything is surely going to look like piece of mess. So the colours on the wall and the music played by the sound system should adapt accordingly. In party situations, appliances must facilitate conviviality and offer practical support without you having to leave your guests or miss any of the action. “Living Cube” is the modern version of a coffee table. It allows you to keep food warm, or cool, and stock-up on snacks and drinks. During the party it lights up, creating a dramatic atmosphere, but when the party is over the light effect disappears, the control panel becomes invisible, and the appliance reverses to a plain looking coffee table. The oven, thanks to a double cavity that has dual microwave/conventional technology, can prepare nachos and popcorn simultaneously. “Pure”, the water purifier, allows everyone to help themselves freely to what they prefer. In the fridge, the bottle compartment lights up, so guests have no hesitation about where to get a drink.
A Calm Brunch: – So after the Saturday night party its Sunday and the day is calm and quiet, all without the hustle of weekdays. Your home is the perfect symbolisation of heaven, life slows down at a heavenly pace and cooking is a pleasure now. So the appliances must be able to support this leisurely pace and enable the user to enjoy domestic life. The kitchen table is fitted with a central hob that keeps food warm, or cool, so there is no need to hurry and brunch can last as long as you want. The fridge will tempt you by lighting up a shelf where a delicious fruit tart is waiting to be enjoyed. If you feel like cooking, the oven has two communicating cavities that can be used both in a conventional way or as microwaves. The oven door becomes opaque to display cooking information, but only when the appliance is being used.
Cooking Dinner with friends :- When you invite friends round, you want it to be a special moment, maybe preparing food together. It makes you feel comfortable and close to your loved ones. Sometimes it’s a fondue in the sitting room, sometimes it’s hamburgers in the garden. Tonight it’s Asian food! Diverse cultures blend, like the flavours in the dish you are cooking, to create a new experience. Japanese cartoons on TV screens, mixed with the photos of last year’s family trip to Japan, add to the exotic atmosphere. This is a travel experience, without having to leave home. 
In these situations we want to create an atmosphere of relaxed intimacy. Appliances must adapt to our creativity and help us delight and entertain our guests. The hood releases the fragrance we have chosen for the event, doubling as an attractive light source to create the right atmosphere. Screens show the images we have selected, inspired by the night’s theme. The overall result is exciting and spectacular. The drawer-dishwasher is ready to quickly wash glasses for a second round of drinks.
