Buyers Guide For Microwaves
Probably still one of the most “space-age” appliances you will find in any modern kitchen.
Microwaves come in many different styles, so you need to check out the market carefully so as you purchase the one that will suit you and your families needs the best .I refer to them as “space age” because they don’t actually brown your food or turn it out in a style that you would recognise as an oven baked finish, they do however heat your food from the inside out so as you can have hot food in minutes .It is after all, a complete convenience kitchen appliance.
So how do they work?
Microwaves work by passing non-ionising microwave radiation through food, causing dielectric heating by absorption of energy in the water, fats and sugar contained in the food.
In today’s world of rushing and running around and a lot of people tending not to have time to sit down and eat properly every single day, then microwaves are indeed very handy. They should however be used as a convenience tool and not used as the new cooker, great for a quick snack, heat up some milk for a nice mug of hot chocolate or indeed to re-heat a dinner that has been prepared earlier in a conventional oven .It is not such a good habit to get into that every thing that you eat comes out of the microwave as it really does take the art out of cooking.
Why are microwaves handy?
Well they can heat up your food in as little as ten seconds. Simply pop your beans in a plastic bowl, stick two bits of toast in the toaster , press the button on the microwave (normally you will have a “quick start” button, which has a pre set timer of thirty seconds) and soon you will hear the “beep”, your beans have been heated to eating temperature.
Things to consider before buying a microwave
1) Will you use it every day or just occasionally, so a basic model will suffice.
2) Will you use it all the time, with a big family and teenagers coming and going at all different times, then you might want the very latest model with all sorts of different settings and options available, you can even buy microwaves that have a built in grill so you can cook that pizza to perfection.
3) Do you have a small work top? , if so you can have your microwave built in over head.
Whatever you purchase take time to read your instructions carefully and always remember use only glass or plastic dishes in your microwave, never metallic bowls.
